Installing Oracle Developer Suite 10g in Vista

I know there are people who are suffering to install Oracle 10g Developer Suite in Windows Vista Operating system. For those who do not know what comes under 10g Suite, it has a list of applications/tools like SQL*Plus 10g, Forms Developer 10g, Reports Developer 10g, JDeveloper 10g etc.

In this article I am sharing my success on how to successfully install these tools in your Vista PC.

  • After downloading the setup files in your local system, change the Compatibility mode of the setup file to avoid the "Unknown Error" during installation.

  • Next change your Virtual memory settings of your PC to a minimum of 256 MB and a maximum of 512 MB for paging file size. (Navigation-> Right Click My computer -> Properties -> Advanced system Settings -> Under Performance, click on settings -> Under advanced tab, under Virtual Memory click on Change)

  • Change the Paging size as shown and restart the PC.

Now run your installer and there wont be any compatibility problems for you anymore. You can run all your tools without any problem just like in a XP SP2 PC.

I am thankful to God that I have helped my company by discovering this part and I hope that this article helps to all those who are struggling to install Developer Tools 10g on Vista OS.

  2. 1. Reg TNS Problem: Have you made sure that the Host entry is available (if you are not using any remote connection).

    2. Reg Java problem: Refer this link http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/htdocs/10gR2/clientsod_forms10gR2.html Update for fixing java problems in Vista. Note: Vista does not support Jinitiator. You need to follow the steps mentioned in the site to fix this.

  3. Raja,

You can do these modifications in your Vista machine to make the java running:

    1. You better have the most updated JRE (1.6.0_03) installed in your Vista.

    2. Copy the file, JVM.dll => C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\client\jvm.dll to overwrite the one in your Jinitiator Path, C:\Program Files\Oracle\JInitiator 1.3.1.28\bin\hotspot

  6. Hi Evelyn,

Please check your TNS entry and see it contains the entry for the database that you are attempting to connect to.

  8. Hi Malz,

The error you specified has got to do with your TNS and Host file entries. Please check the same and try again.

  10. Hello Anonymous,

Please check the first para and screenshot of my article. Copy the set up files to your local hard disk and then modify the properties, otherwise it won't show.

  15. Hi Anonymous,

Your C Drive is out of space. How much free space does the drive have? Please keep atleast 2 GB free space while attempting to install the Oracle Developer Suite, otherwise it will cause lots of problems like you mentioned.

    Thanks,
    Jithendra

  16. Yeah, that's whats confusing me. I have 119 GB free. Is this a Vista issue? Thanks again.

  19. Hello Jithendra, tks a lot for the good tips. But I still couldn´t make it work alright. I´m on a WVista client machine. I have installed oracle DS 10g sucessfully, and I have also created a TNS sucessfully. The server is W2000 oracle 10g and is working alright. When I try connect my client with the server i get errors
ora-00604 and ora-01009. I have already installed the JRE 1.6 last built, and also I have already replaced the jvm.dll. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

I am trying to install 10G client on Win7 and I did the set up of what you suggested in this article but I am getting the error, 'Error in writing to directory. C:\..... Please ensure this directory is writable and has more than 45 MB ..

What do you think is the problem.

thank you so much for all your help.

  31. Hi onlybliss, I am sorry in this article I have focussed only installation over Windows Vista and not Win 7. But I can guess what might be wrong with the installation in yours, I think there is some write access error or less space in your C drive. Please have your system administrator check that particluar error.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thank you so much for your response. Total disc space is 455 GB and the free space is 384 GB. Can you tell me how can i fix if it is a write acess related problem.

Installation process is creating a folder in the %TEMP% and not able to write into that folder.

Thank you once again for all your help.
